Crypt of Medea by Arthur Britto and Allan Lamb From Sir-Tech, 1984 Requires 64k Apple II; Mockingboard (Speech) is optional Original deprotect by The Apple Bandit Crypt of Medea is a picture-text adventure. Your challenge is to escape from the crypt. According to the walkthrough by Douglas Cameron, it is possible to win if you play using the original disk. It is _not_ possible to win using the old deprotected copy version. If you are playing from a deprotected copy, use the new version: The new version of the deprotected copy should be available from Tarnover, Asimov, and other Apple II archive sites. Look for a file named "Medea_v2001.zip" or something similar. The new version can be identified after booting by the presence of a version number in the Text displayed in the first room's description-- e.g. "v2001.5". It includes the game disk and a disk for saving game positions plus a copy of this file. For links to archives, see the Apple II FAQs Game Sites page at http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/A2FAQs7GAMESITES.html . Playing the Adventure You tell the game what you want to do by entering brief statements such as GET SHOVEL, DROP FLASK, PULL KNOB, LIGHT CANDLE, THROW GLASS AT MONSTER, etc.. To move you can enter a phrase, like GO NORTH, or just N. Enter INVENTORY (or just I) to see what you are carrying. When you enter a room you will normally see a picture of it. Pressing a key to begin entering a command switches you to a Text display where you can see what you are typing and get some more information about the room. There are a few special command keys: Escape: toggles picture or Text display Control-F: toggle Font to include lower case or be all upper case Control-I: toggle whether room exits are shown in inverse Text Control-P: toggle pictures On/Off Control-S: toggle Sound On/Off Control-V: toggle Mockingboard "Voice" On/Off (for saying Text); appears to require a Mockingboard with Speech option 'Medea allows up to nine game saves per side on a seperate disk. The disk can be any DOS 3.3 INITed disk. To save a position enter SAVE. To load in a saved position enter RESTORE. The game does have a few situations where you can be killed with little or no warning. And, in a few situations, it is possible to do something which makes winning impossible without being killed. Mainly, the latter involve losing or wasting some key item; but, in at least one case (the black and white buttons in the 'Tank Room'), the bad move is not at all obvious-- hint: do not press either button. When you swing across the ravine, the game will tell you if it thinks you have done something which makes winning impossible. However; you will eventually get a long way from the ravine and there may not be any futher checks. It's a good idea to save your position fairly often and keep brief notes about your situation at each saved position. You will probably need to go back to an earlier position a few times before winning. The game works fine at regular Apple II speed (1MHz). On a IIgs or other faster Apple II or an emulator, the adventure can be played at higher speed until you reach a situation near the end where you must perform a few actions in a limited time (a bomb is involved). Setting speed to "Normal" (1MHz) before attempting the necessary actions helps to guarantee that you will have enough time.
