Sorry for not calling your BBS more often, though. It is really a unique system to play with. But it is rather slow. And the main menu was still a little unfriendly --hah listen to who is saying this. You should have seen my BBS during its short lifespan. About 1/2 of all the callers there got caught in some loop I missed, and just hung up and never called again. I dunno. This help file is for newcomers to the software. Read this file if you aren't quite sure how to use the BBS, or are relatively new to BBSing in general. You may have already noticed that Acropolis is very different from most BBS software that you normally encounter. This, many times, intimidates people; however, Acropolis is actually quite easy to use once you understand the basics. This file contains a small tutorial on navigating the Acropolis message base. It will be helpful if you print out this file so you can read it as you go through the board. > Introduction to BBSing ------------------------ The main point of BBSing is to talk with others, and share your ideas and views with other people. This is exactly what the message base for. In a message base, you can read others' messages, and reply to them. Most BBSes have many different topics to choose from, and you can choose which ones you like. Another important part of BBSing is file transfers and games. Many BBSs offer a file transfer area, where you can upload (send to the BBS) and download (receive from the BBS) files. Online games range from one-player action games, to multi-player RPGs. Many games require some sort of emulation to play, so before you play make sure your communications software supports the emulation that the game you are going to play requires. Please keep in mind though, that file transfers and games intended for use by those who contribute to the BBS by acively participating in message base discussions. Don't abuse your priveldges to file transfers and games by not participating in the message base! > Getting started with Acropolis -------------------------------- There are many different ways to nagivate through the Acropolis message base, and once you're familiar with Acropolis you can choose your favorite style. For now, we'll concentrate on one of the most flexable methods. A few words before we begin. Commands will be indicated like this: ead orward from [#] You simply type the letters in the <> brackets and optionally the letters in the [] brackets. Acropolis will show the rest of the characters automatically so you need not type them. If you make a mistake while entering a command, you can use the backspace or delete keys to erase the last command. When you're finished entering a command, press RETURN or ENTER. When you first call the BBS, you will be asked to enter your name and password, and then you will be greeted with some information about yourself and the latest news bulletins. Of course, you must have gotten this far already, or you wouldn't be here. Well, after that 'greeting,' you will come to the first "room." A room is what Acropolis calls each of its topics. A room may contain messages, file transfers, external programs, or any combination of the three. Each time you enter a room, you will see some information about it. For example: Lobby: 50 Messages (1-50) 5 New This is called the "room info" of the current room. If you are in a room that contains file transfers or external programs, (in Acropolis, they're called "wormholes") an extra line is added that informs you that there are 'Transfers Available' or 'Wormholes Available.' After the room info, you'll see the "prompt", which looks something like this: /T-60\ Lobby> The prompt always has has a letter 'T' followed by the time you have remaining that day, and the name of the room you are in followed by a 'room icon.' The room icon is there to let you know what type of room you are in. The meanings of the icons are: ">" means that there is only messages in a room, "]" indicates that there is file transfers, "}" tells you that there are wormholes, ")" indicates a networked room. Messages posted in this room will also appear on other boards in the Acropolis Network. As you can see, "Lobby" is a message-only room. You can start reading the new messages this room by typing ew Messages, (remember, you only need to type "N", Acropolis will automatically type the rest for you). This command displays all of the new messages that have been posted in this room since the last time you visited it. If you don't visit a room for a long period of time, many messages can pile up. if this happens and you don't want to read through them all, ou can ignore all of the new message in a room (make the new messages old) with the gnore new messages command. After you have read all of the new messages in a room, you can either post a message, or go on to the next room. To post a message, type

ost message. This brings you into the Acropolis text editor, where you can enter your message. Once you're done entering the message, type on a line by itself and Acropolis will post your message to the room. After you have entered your message, or if you didn't want to post, you should go on to the next room. Do this by pressing oto. At the next room, you simply repeat the process of reading messages and posting. If you come across a room that you don't like, and don't think you will ever want to see again, you can simply type Forget room. The room will no longer appear for you unless you . ump to the room (by typing 'ump ') and Unforget Room. This is extremely useful for rooms that you don't care to participate in. > For more information ---------------------- You now should understand the basics of navigating through the board, reading and posting messages. Once you are comfortable with this, you should look through the other help files for detailed information on other features of Acropolis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- /\ /\ \ C R O P O L I S / \ \............... /====\ \ / \ \ Online Help ^Acropolis Online Help FILE TRANSFERS March 1993 - by Fred Gotfredson December 1993 - Last revision by Ryan Gesler -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Acropolis File Transfers -------------------------- Most Boards with file transfers have a separate file transfer section. Acropolis, however, integrates file trasnfers right in the rooms along with the message base. For this reason, it is much different than other trasnfer systems you may have encountered. File transfers are located in "Directory Rooms". Directory rooms are indicated either by the directory room icon at the end of the roomname (the "]" icon), and also indicated in the room info. When in a directory room, you can see what files are in the directory by typing ead irectory. > Choosing your protocol ------------------------ Acropolis currently supports Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem file transfers, with a variety of different options for each. The protocol and options you select depend mostly on the terminal program and the type of modem you are using. To choose your protocol, enter the nline parameters menu and select "Transfer Protocol". If you choose Zmodem, there are no other options to worry about so you can skip to the next section. If you choose Xmodem or Ymodem, you'll need to determine the packet size you would like to use. Generally, if you're using a slower modem or get a lot of line noise it's best to use a smaller packet size. If you're using a faster modem or get very few errors when online, a larger packet size will speed up the transfer. Next, you'll need to select any options you'd like to use. If your terminal program supports Binary ][ or ProDOS options, you should use one of those because it will preserve the actual filetype and file length during the transfer. If you don't have either of these options available, choose Standard. The protocol that you've selected here in the nline Parameters menu will be the one Acropolis uses when you do a ownload/pload ile, or a ownload atch. > Downloading (receiving files) ------------------------------- If you want to get a description of one of the files, just type ownload ile. You will be asked for a filename, and then you will see some stats for the file and a description of it. After the description, you will be asked if you would like to download the file. If the file looks interesting and you want to take the time to download it, simply answer es. Acropolis will then ask if you wish to terminate your call after the transfer. This will close your connection with Apple Seeds once the transfer is done, and is very convienent if you don't want to sit around waiting for the transfer to finish. Acropolis will then remind you of the protocol you've selected and will start sending the file. You should then tell your term program to start receiving. If you don't want to use the transfer protocol that you've selected in the nline parameters menu for a particular transfer, you can override it with the commands ownload modem ownload modem , or ownload modem . This will send the file with that protcol using the standard packet size for that protocol (128 byte checksum for Xmodem, 1k CRC for Ymodem). If you have selected, in the nline parameters menu, any batch protocol (that is, anything except Xmodem Standard or Xmodem ProDOS), you can download a batch (more than one) of files. To do this, simply go to around to the rooms with the files you want to download in the batch, and type add to atch with the file you want to add. Once you've added all the files, type ownload atch. Acropolis will then send all the files you've added to your batch. > Uploading (sending files) --------------------------- To upload a file to a directory, just type pload ile at the main prompt. You should then tell your terminal program to start sending files. Once the upload is finished, Acropolis will ask you to name the file if necessary, and have you enter a description of the file. If you've selected a Batch protocol you can also upload a batch (more than one) of files. Once the batch upload is finished, Acropolis will have you enter a description for each of the files you included in the batch. As in the Download section, you can also override your default protocol with a command like pload modem, pload modem, or pload modem. > Reading Textfiles ------------------- Acropolis has a feature that will type the contents of any ASCII text file to the screen. Be careful, though, that you don't accidentally choose an archive instead, because very often, they are saved as TXT format. When you type ead extfile, you will be asked which file to read. You can abort the displaying of the file at any time by pressing top. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- /\ /\ \ C R O P O L I S / \ \............... /====\ \ / \ \ Online Help ^> Acropolis commands, as of 3 Jan 93 ------------------------------------ > Messages: > Rooms: ead lobal new messages nown rooms ead orward [from <#>] ead nfo on this room read message ** oto next room w/ new messages ** ew messages in this room ist ooms (All) **

Acropolis Online Help ELECTRONIC MAIL August 1993 - by Ryan Gesler June 1994 - Last revision by Ryan Gesler ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Acropolis EMail lets you send private messages to users on the local BBS or any user on the Acropolis network. There is a wide array of EMail sending options, such as carbon copies (sending mail to multiple users), netmail, mailing lists, and so on. > Reading Mail -------------- Command: ead ail After entering the read mail command, Acropolis will list all new and old mail in your mailbox, assuming you have mail. At the "Selection:" prompt, enter the number of the mail you want to read. The mail header shows you information about the message, and will look something like this: From: CiderMan @ Apple Seeds BBS Dated: 21 Aug 93 at 11:30pm Subject: Electronic Mail CC: Kermit @ CompuBros. Tigersharke @ Limited Edition Ski Master @ Mars The first line is the same as a message header. If the mail was sent to multiple users, the "CC:" lines will indicate the addresses of the recipients of carbon copies. After Acropolis displays the mail, you'll have the option to send a reply to the sender. If you choose to reply and if the mail was sent to multiple users, you'll have the option to reply to all recipients of carbon copies. What this means is that carbon copies of your reply would be sent to all of the users who received carbon copies of the mail you're replying to. You can then enter your reply. If you didn't chose to reply to the mail, you'll be asked if you want to delete this piece of mail. If you don't delete the mail, it will then come up as "Old" mail. If you replied to a piece of mail, when you're finished entering your reply the original mail will come back up and you'll have the opportunity to delete that mail if you'd like. > Sending Mail -------------- Command: send ail When you send mail, you'll be promted for the addresses of the users you wish to send mail to. To send mail to a user on the BBS you're on, simply enter the username. Acropolis will verify to make sure the user exists, and let you know if it couldn't find the user on the system. To send mail to a user on another BBS in the Acropolis network, you must enter the username, followed by the @ symbol, followed by the name of the BBS that the user is on. For example "CiderMan @ Apple Seeds". When you've entered the names of the users you want to send this piece of mail to, just press return at a blank username prompt. You'll be asked to enter the subject of the mail, and then you'll be able to enter the actual mail. After you save the mail, Acropolis shows you how many bytes your message was and how many users it was sent to. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- /\ /\ \ C R O P O L I S / \ \............... /====\ \ / \ \ Online Help ^Acropolis Online Help HELP FILES October 1993 - by Ryan Gesler --------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Using Acropolis Online Help ----------------------------- To view a help file, enter elp (only type the letters in <> brackets), where is: Help - This file New - A tutorial for new users to Acropolis and BBSing Reference - A quick sumary of each command Messages - How to use the Acropolis Message Base Transfers - How to use Acropolis File Transfers EMail - How to use Acropolis EMail and Acropolis Network EMail Parameters - How to adjust your acount setup --------------------------------------------------------------------------- /\ /\ \ C R O P O L I S / \ \............... /====\ \ / \ \ Online Help ^Sysop commands: / ser [User#] / dd \ / essage ysop < dit >-< oom [Roomname] | \ ill / \ ormhole | \ ile [Filename] | alidate | ove file [Filename] | asic |

This file describes exactly what each does and what the options are. > Page Pauses ------------- With page pauses turned on, Acropolis will pause and wait for you to hit any key after each screenfull. This is essential unless you're a speed reader or using a really slow modem. > Message pausing ----------------- This will pause and wait for you to press return between each message while doing a ew messages or ead lobal new messages. This is nice for users who want to look like they're entering a lot of important commands while online. > Hot Keys ---------- With hotkeys on, Acropolis will act upon your commands without having to press return after the command. This makes using the board a little faster since you don't have to do as many keystrokes per command, but it's a lot easier to evoke a command by mistake with hotkeys turned on. > Newscan Mode -------------- With this set to "last old", Acropolis will display the last old message before displaying the new messages when you do a ew messages or ead lobal new messages command. This is helpful in reminding you where the discusion left off last time you were in the room. > Emulation ----------- This sets the terminal emulation that Acropolis uses to send special codes to your computer to display special characters, clear the screen, and so forth. If you're using ProTERM, you should select PSE emulation. If you're on a computer that supports color ANSI, you should select one of the two ANSI options (generally the IBM ANSI looks better on an IBM, and Mac ANSI looks better on a mac, but try both and see what you like!). Otherwise, select None so that you don't get any extra characters sent to your computer. > Show sigs ----------- Signatures are small pieces of text that are tacked on to the end of every message. Usually users put their e-mail address and other important information in their signatures. With this option, you can choose to display the signatures on all messages in every room, on just messages in networked rooms, or not display signatures at all. By the way, you can also edit your own signature in the online preferences- read on... > Transfer protocol ------------------- This selects the default protocol that Acropolis uses when you go to ownload/pload ile or ownload atch. You can select Xmodem, Ymodem, or Zmodem, and also some other options if you select X or Ymodem. > Screen Length & Width ----------------------- This tells Acropolis how long your screen is in lines, so that it can pause the output once your screen fills up. This should usually be 23 or 24 depending on what type of computer you're on and if your terminal program is displaying a status bar. The width tells Acropolis how wide your screen is so that it can do wordwrap at the end of each line in the text editor. This is almost always 80. > "Finger" Setup (aka "Read User" setup) ---------------------------------------- This lets you select how much information you want to reveal to users who do the ead ser with your username. Each "level" will display what's in that level and all levels above it. For instance, if you choose level 2, a user would see your real name, computer type, birthdate, username, access level, # calls, last login date, signature file, and info file (you can edit your signature and info files in online prefrences), if they type ead ser . > Password ---------- This allows you to change your password. It's usually a good idea to change your password frequently and use a different password on each system you call. > Signature ----------- This allows you to edit your Signature file, which is appended to the end of each message you post. Signature files should be kept short- 2 or 3 lines is best, and should include useful information only such as E-Mail addresses and so on. > User Information ------------------ This allows you to edit your Informaton file, which is displayed if when a user "Reads" your account with the Read User command. You could include just about anything in here... be creative! :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- /\ /\ \ C R O P O L I S / \ \............... /====\ \ / \ \ Online Help ^ Acropolis Online Help MESSAGE BASE October 1993 - by Ryan Gesler --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Message base is a great place for conversation and discussion on various topics. The Acropolis message base is designed to be simple to use for this purpose. There are three different ways to go about using the Acropolis message base, and you're free to choose whatever method you like best. > The RETURN method ------------------- The RETURN method is by far the simplest and the most flexable method for using the Acropolis message base. Simply pressing RETURN at the prompt will read the next new message available in that room. If you keep pressing return, you'll be able to read the new messages, one by one, in that room. When you reach the last message in the room, Acropolis will inform you and at that point you could

ost a message to the room if you'd like. Then press RETURN which will take you to the next room with new messages. Once again you would hit return to read each new message, and continue the cycle. > The Goto-New method --------------------- If you don't like having to press return each time you want to read a message, the Goto-New method will save you those extra keystrokes. Simply enter the ew messages command at the prompt, and all of the new messages will be displayed page-by-page until the end of the messages in that room. Once Acropolis is done displaying messages, you can

ost a message if you'd like, or oto the next room where you would start the cycle over again. > The Global NewScan method --------------------------- If you don't like having to continually repeat the oto and ew message commands, then you might want to consider the Global NewScan method. Simply press ead lobal new, and Acropolis will display all of the new messages in all of the rooms, giving you a chance to post a message after finishing up each room. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- /\ /\ \ C R O P O L I S / \ \............... /====\ \ / \ \ Online Help ^03gf * PARAMETERSp REFERENCEs(EMAIL$<SYSOPi TRANSFERSbCOMMANDS1 2HELPMESSAGES: NEWb^STS 3 Acropolis 0 AutoMessage 8 Dec 96 23:45 3 Welcome to Acropolis! type for help. This is a very laid back system, and I hope you enjoy your visits! The board has file transfers, external programs and games, but our main focus is the messaging system. You'll find discussions going on in the message bases ranging from Computers and programming to Politics and current events, as well as general chat about nothing important at all. Apple Seeds runs software called Acropolis, which I have been writing myself for well over a year now. You should find the software fairly easy to use, but if you have any problems be sure to type H and read some help files, or e-mail your specific questions to me. Getting your user account ------------------------- First of all there's no fee for using the BBS... it's free! All of the information you supply when you apply for your account will be kept confidential (unless you choose to relveal it), so I won't give your name, phone number or address out to anyone. You will first get a chance to use the board with a guest account. When you hit T to log out of the system, you'll be asked if you want to apply for a permanant account. If you intend to call back then answer YES and all the questions that follow. I usually don't bother to voice validate, so just call back in 24 hours or so and your account should be ready to go by then! Oh, and there are a bunch of user setup options that you can adjust to your preferences by hitting O at the prompt. You might want to look into that to turn on ANSI or hotkeys or whatever else you like. Have fun! ^Welcome to Apple Seeds BBS!
