From: Charles T. 'Dr. Tom' Turley Dated: 6/8/98 About: Haunted House by Brian Barnes Files: HauntedHouse and HauntedHouse2 as ShrinkIt and Disk Image files (.sdk and .dsk) Status: Freeware - with no restrictions The following - formally unreleased Apple II game 'Haunted House' has been approved for release by it's author as freeware and as such I've uploaded it to our Apple II main ftp site - Ground. If anybody needs to varify this the authors email address follows: Ggadwa@aol.com A short documentation draft is included from the games author below. A more detailed documentation may be available later one from the author. Your feedback to the author would be appreciated! Cheers, Tom ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Haunted Documentation - Draft The trick is to open all the boxes until you get an "up", then proceed to the elevator to the next level. Boxes contain gold, bullets, nothing, and bombs (ouch). Use (uh, maybe) SPACE to open them (??? not sure) and the joystick to move the rabbit. Button 0 fires (limited bullet supply) and Button 0 "grabs" whats in open boxes. Each monster on each level is different, I'll have to play to remember what's up with them. THANK YOU very much, BTW. What'd'ya think of it? Brian Email: Ggadwa@aol.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ More Docs Joystick- Move Left, Right, Up, Down Button 0 (Fire Button)- Shoot Button 1 (Aux Button)- Open box, Activate elevator SPACE- Get stuff in box (bullets, gold, elevator key) To win you must get through Level 10 (called "Level T"). If you choose to start at Level T, this is not too difficult. However, your main goal is to have the High Score in the roster of scores (or, at least, to place in the roster). Getting a really high score requires going through several levels. The High Scores roster holds 30 scores with initials. The scores in the roster (on the disks you start with) bottom out a bit above 50,000. To place in the roster your score needs to exceed the current bottom score in the roster. To get through a level you must find and get the elevator key (which is in one of the boxes) and make it to the elevator. Since you will need to pass through locked doors, you will need to get the door key. This key is out in the open. Walking over the door key picks it up. Hints Opening Boxes Some of the boxes are boobey-trapped with bombs. If you open one of these while not moving, you will probably not have time to beat the countdown and escape the blast. It's best to open boxes on-the-run-- you run past a box and press the Aux button as you pass. If the box is trapped, you should make it safely beyond the blast when the bomb goes. Hovering above a box, you can open it and get the contents even if your feet are barely touching the top. This is handy to know in case the box is in a small horizontal space with a bat flying rapidly back and forth past the box. (You can try dropping down rapidly and shooting the bat; but, for a tight space, the bat will usually get you before you can shoot it.) Monsters If an active bat, pumpkin, or other monster touches you, you lose a life and have to restart the level. It's okay to touch resting bats. Most levels have a chief monster (werewolf, etc.). This monster seems to start moving toward you (from the other side of the maze) from the moment you begin a level. The more quickly you can get through the maze and near the elevator, the better your chances of getting around the monster. Elevator When you obtain the elevator key, "UP" will appear flashing at the top of the screen to let you know you can use the elevator. To use the elevator you must enter it and press the Aux button.
