Ultima IV with MockingBoard on the IIgs Version 2.2, 1997-1999 File name: U4MBonGSv22.zip Use WinZIP or similar utility to uncompress file to get U4MBonGSv22.shk Shareware by Jeff Hurlburt This collection of files is named "U4MBonGSv22". It supercedes earlier versions named "U4MBonGSv2", "U4MOCKV2", "U4MOCK", etc.. U4MBonGSv22 includes U4SETUP, a program which lets you play Ultima IV with MockingBoard music on a IIgs equipped with one or two MockingBoards. You can, also, set Speed to Normal and set the screen Border Color. None of this requires changing Control Panel settings. You will have two major setup options: 1- New Boot Disk You can copy the files on Ultima IV's copy-protected boot disk, Disk-A (Side A: Program Disk) to a diskette initialized under a fast DOS and place the U4SETUP program on the copy. OR You can now copy the files from a deprotected copy of Disk-A and place the U4SETUP program on that copy. Either way, the new 'open' Copy becomes your "New Ultima IV Boot" disk. It will get you into the game with the desired MockingBoard Slot, Speed, and Border Color setup with no need to boot a separate disk. 2- Separate Launcher You can place the U4SETUP program on a separate diskette, Zip disk, or hard disk and run it as launcher for Ultima IV. The program will, as above, let you set MockingBoard Slot(s), Speed, and Border Color settings. It will boot your original Ultima IV boot disk and start the game with the settings you've selected. Using ShrinkIt to unpack U4MBonGSv22.shk you will get two .SDK files: U4MB.INST.SDK and U4DD.SDK. These are shrinked 5.25" disks which must be unpacked to 5.25" disks using 8-bit ShrinkIt. U4MB.INST is the "Install Disk". It is the one with all of the U4MBonGS files. It boots a DOS 3.3-compatible DOS and starts a program selector. U4DD is an 'empty' disk initialized via David-DOS. It expects the Hello program to be named "U4SETUP". David-DOS does not include an INIT command-- it requires a separate utility. The U4DD diskette can be copied to another diskette using Disk.Muncher (included on U4MB.INST). Complete details are included in the README text file on the U4MB.INST disk. Version 2.2 incorporates a bug fix and adds new features. The bug was the persistent failure of the U4MB.INST diskette's Hello program INIT option to correctly INIT many diskettes. The bug has no effect of U4MBonGS; but, since the Hello is intended to be useful in many applications, it needed fixing. The bug has been eliminated in this release. New features include improved directions in the Readme.txt file and some changes to make U4SETUP prompts fit better when the program is used as an Ultima 4 launcher from hard disk. The major new feature is allowing the user to create an Ultima 4 + U4SETUP boot disk from unprotected boot disk copies available on archive sites. This required relocating the Patcher, adding a routine to the Patcher which detects and strips off the 15-sector 'pirate banner' from the Ultima 4 file named "INIT" as well as deallocating three wasted sectors on the blank David DOS disk.
